ABOUT

Welcome to Kent’s top hockey venue. We’re a friendly, family club based at Polo Farm Sports Club in Canterbury.

We have teams playing at every level from National League to local leagues, veterans to juniors. Whatever your level of hockey, fitness or commitment you’ll find the right team for you at Canterbury Hockey Club.

Our Men's 1st XI plays in Division 1 South of the England Hockey League and Ladies 1st XI in Conference East with our remaining sides competing in the South East Hockey leagues. Altogether we have 10 Men's and 5 Ladies sides plus 2 Vets sides playing in the EH cup competitions on a Sunday.

Not least we pride ourselves on our commitment to Junior Hockey by providing opportunities for juniors of all abilities all the way from U6s to U18s.

HISTORY

Canterbury Hockey Club was founded in November 1901. The only details available are those provided in an article from The Kentish Gazette of 9th November 1901 and which are reproduced below:

"Hockey. At a well-attended meeting held on Friday night at the Foresters' Hall, of gentleman interested in the game of hockey, it was resolved that a club should be formed to be known as the Canterbury Hockey Club."

Whilst no Canterbury Ladies H.C. is known of in 1901, a report in The Kentish Gazette in December of that year did provide team lists for the 1-1 drawn ladies match between Town and Country played at Loo Down.

For the Junior section, the story begins in 1977, the season following the club's 75th anniversary, when a few club members began to realise that the future success of the Club would be greatly advanced by helping young players to develop their skills, particularly those children who were not at hockey-playing schools and for whom club coaching was the only way into the game.
