Men’s Friars vs Gravesham and Wellcome Unicorns (Home) | 09 Apr 22

Lost 2-3

Scorers: Pete Bowell, John Aikin

MoM: Hugo Fassum and Simon Triggs

DoD: not awarded

So for their final league match of the season the Friars faced second in the league Gravesham. The sun was shining with the Friars in pride of place on AW1 – a fine looking bunch – pairing as ever experience with youth and once again skippered by the returning Tony Jones, fully focused so he said!

The match started well with Hugo and Thomas creating many opportunities up front. The Friars took an early lead thanks to Pete B, but other opportunities to score were missed or foiled by the post. But while the Friars squandered their chances, Gravesham took theirs and it was a 2-1 lead they secured going into the halftime break. The usual jaffas and a stirring team talk from Trigger were administered. Despite the valiant efforts of the Friars defence Gravesham extended their lead to 3-1 shortly after. However, the Friars were very much still in the fight, cheered on by a small but vocal home crowd.

The defence held firm and more chances were created by the midfield. Finally John A scored with a deflection from a firm hit into the D from Thomas. Gravesham found themselves reduced to 10 players for the final minutes when umpire Phil showed the door to their lippy midfield dynamo that some labelled their “bearded ringer” (never a surprise at this time of the year!). All in all, it was a good natured match and the final score was a 3-2 win for Gravesham.

Many thanks to umpires Phil and Martin and indeed all those who have umpired us this season.

The ladies laid on a truly exceptional post match and indeed end-of term tea with a wide eyed Gravesham player overheard to remark “is this all for us?!” . Yep, that’s the fantastic Polo Tea Ladies for you plus the banter! The Friars enjoyed their tea and beer and reflected on what an enjoyable year it had been and how fantastic it was to see out a full season of hockey after the recent disruptions. For the Friars it was a season having achieved with unerring accuracy 6th in the League (out of 12), always the summit of our realistic ambitions. So……onto next season and further mid-table ambition and success but not before Pete Robbins, Club Supper and The Friars very own already sold-out Team Supper at a secret location where the captain stands tall….on the table! Pip pip!
