Men’s Friars vs Marden Russets 7 (Away) | 05 Feb 22

Drew 1-1

Scorers: John Aikin

MoM: Paul Donovan

The Friars travelled this week to Marden to do battle with the league leaders. They were yet again without Scribbler who is yet to return from injury and also missing Big Pete and Jamie.

The Friars took an early lead two minutes in, with John Aikin latching onto a Pete Bowell pass and catching the Marden goalie napping with a reverse stick flick low to his left. 1-0 to the Friars!

However, the Friars’ elation was short lived with Marden equalising in the eighth minute.

There then followed an intense duel for the rest of match which was played largely in the Friars back quarter.

The defence and midfield stood firm in the face of intense pressure and occasional shoulder barging from Marden. Dono again impressed with many instinctive saves to thwart our opponents.

Young Thomas Newell had another excellent match on the right wing showing pace and deft stickwork, launching a number of counter attacks.

Our captain Tony Jones, ahead of his 79th Birthday today (Tuesday) – recently reselected to the England national team (which one-ed?!) – also looked threatening on the left wing.

However, no further goals were scored by either side and an enjoyable and competitive match concluded a 1-1 draw. This is a great result and was followed by Harvey’s Sussex ale and an excellent sausage, chips and beans that was generously provided by our hosts, and much appreciated by the thirsty and hungry Friars.

Squad: Paul Donovan (GK), Thomas Newell, Pete Bowell, John Aikin, Tom Parkin, John Ratcliff, Kevin Goulden, Tony Jones (C), Chris Ward, Brian Hurlow, Mike Barton
