After last week’s 4-0 win the 5s were looking for another 3 points with an away trip to take on Ashford 2s. The 1st league meeting before Christmas ended in disappointment with us conceding a last minute goal to go down 3-2.
An excellent start as we scored from a short corner from the returning James Rollins with a well taken drag flick to the keeper’s right. We then scored again via a neat deflection from Bucks via a cross from Forber. Ashford applied a fair amount of pressure for the rest of the half but the solid and dependable combo of Andy and Tom repelled all comers. Chances were being created by both sides and Brad pulled off a couple of excellent saves to keep our 2 goal margin at half time.
No halftime ‘hair dryer’ treatment required this week, it was all calm and serene with the message to keep going and stay tight to their dangerous players.
The 2nd half followed the same pattern as the 1st, with Ashford having the majority of possession but with the 5s looking the more likely to score. This is indeed what happened as Simon Downes scored and then with 5 minutes to go Ethan Aitken scored the goal of the season following an excellent counter attack and defence splitting pass from Bucks. Ethan later claimed to not be able to see a thing due to the low winter sun! Someone buy that lad a blindfold for next week…the goal was a thing of beauty, lobbed over the keeper on the top of the D and then volleyed past the retreating defenders.
4-0 was how it finished and a healthy 7 points out of a possible 9 post Christmas. Next week the side take on a promotion chasing Cliftonville 1s at home.
