Ladies 1st XI vs Indoor (Away) | 23 Jan 22

Drew 5-5

Canterbury ladies travelled to Telford this week end hoping to secure their place in Division 2 whilst wondering how close they could push for promotion…

The answer proved to be very close.

Two weeks ago the first round of games was played at Polo farm and Canterbury came a solid second, with a lot of good outdoor hockey, indoor !- plus the epic reintroduction of club legend Nikki Triggs- who inspired on and off the pitch.

It was clear progress would need to be made in order to compete in the next round and keep their place in the division- and so began the most epic journey of learning from coaching staff to players alike. The commitment from the squad was inspiring and as we travelled to Telford we definitely felt more like an indoor team and the spirit was high- poems and baby photos helping the buzz!

So Saturday came and our first opponents Ipswich met their match, despite a first minute goal conceded and Mel losing it (in the same first minute!) Canterbury steadied and grew during the match with goals from Nikki Triggs, Lucy Barnes, Madi Upton(top corner) Dom Masters(cheeky drive from the left) and Abbie Bean, lovely finish from Alice and Mazza assists, to take 3 vital points,
Next up Knole Park- the ‘shield’ came out and the first quarter was inspired 0.0 however, they are actually quite good, so punishing a few of our errors they got themselves a 4.0 lead at half time.
No chance of this team giving up though and more determination and effort and skill from everyone saw just a 5.2 defeat come our way.

Results that day meant promotion was still in our hands- 2 big games on Sunday again Beeston and Stourport stood in our way. More focus, more learning, more effort required. Unfortunately a couple of injuries made the task tougher but if it hasn’t been mentioned before team spirit…. absolutely kicked in!

Beeston Sunday morning ended in a 3.3 draw, a typically cool Alice Brett finish giving us the lead with 5 mins to play, but we were unable to hold on, in fact we were actually grateful to get the draw in the end- top defending from Captain Pinney ,keepers Becca and Bex making untold numbers of saves and Lara Wilkinson literally running through walls for her team- contributed to this team performance.

3rd place was now almost guaranteed and we were still in with a chance of promotion – one…more…push

What a game to come!
Stourport – clinical and fast counter attacks had seen them score plenty all week end, we knew we needed to work hard and score lots!

End to end, exciting hockey saw the lead change sides early on before
Canterbury found themselves 4.2 down then 5.3 down with 5 mins to play got a well earned draw – 4 goals from the ageless, nerveless Lucy Barnes who played pretty much every minute of every game and a lovely finish from Abbie Bean came to our rescue.

Could we have done any more – No

Could we be any prouder -No

Has this been a TEAM effort -hell yeah!!!

Bring on the rest of the season
