Men’s Friars vs Maidstone 4s (Away) | 11 Dec 21

Lost 0-1

MoM: Pete Neville

CRUEL TWIST OF FATE

This turned out to be a game with some of the best hockey at this level of the whole season. Maidstone had at least 4 high class youngsters and Friars had Jonny Devereux and Adam Michale their two plus wizened heads from both sides and two ageing Friars internationals – skipper Tony Jones over 75 England and Jolyon Miles over something-or-other for Ireland.
A first half saw both keepers fully active keeping clean sheets despite good chances from both teams -m Paul Donovan for the Friars once again finding useful practice for his day job!.
It is so often that games for the Friars against Maidstone have only a goal in it or it’s a draw and this looked like the most likely and indeed the most just result until a goal mouth melee 10 minutes from time left Maidstone ahead. Friars heads did not dip but the Maidstone keeper calmly as he had done throughout the game kept John Aikin and Devereux’s probing attacks at bay. Pete Bowell and Mchale both had chances also.
There was no disgrace in taking no points but loads of pride from some convincing, for once! joined up Friars hockey. Poor old Pete Bowell went home with a long face – dragged off by his better half at the end of the game who sees away games as shopping opportunities much to Pete’s pain in his credit card pocket. Happy Christmas all.
