The Ladies Over 35s had their opening round of the National Cup away to Folkestone on Sunday.
We welcomed two new players to the squad, Lara and Rachel who both had fantastic debuts in the midfield and did lots of running, as is the first requirement for the newest recruits who have “come of age”.
Rachel was overheard to quote” it will be strange to play with old people”, although she was quick to point out her previous week’s team members had been towards the other end of the age spectrum. We forgave her comment following the explanation!
We also welcomed back Karen to the green and white army following a two year break, and she looked as if she had never been away!
The game was quick to start but soon Canterbury took control with the majority of the possession. Cara opened the scoring on 14 mins with a cool finish, following some well worked passing through the lines. Team defence were called into action a number of times following some fast breakaway attacks from Folkestone, they were solid and Trudy made some fine saves..
We added another goal following sustained possession down the right side that was deflected in by Natalie. In the second half Canterbury were dominant and added 3 further goals from open play through Jackie Savage, Moira and Cara. Canterbury were a comfortable 5-0 up. Folkestone then did have a consolation breakaway goal at the end of the game when Canterbury were pressing high.
Special mention must go to Sibs for the pass of the game or maybe the pass of her playing career, a pass so pure it sliced through their lines straight to our waiting centre forward poised on out penalty spot. However the finish wasn’t quite so perfect!
So on reflection… a great game, a great performance, some cracking goals, and now through to round two!
