We expected a fairly feisty fixture with the top of the table team Burnt Ash and we weren’t disappointed. A couple of quick goals scored by the visiting team put the Grims on the back foot early on but our defence, led by our warrior captain Paul, kept possession well while keeping the Burnt Ash strike force at bay for the majority of the first half. A valiant debut for Hugo Corteen Coleman kept the competition alive with his composure and confidence on the ball.
The home side seemed a little off the pace and a couple of soft goals kept the pressure on the defence over the course of the second half. This of course didn’t deter the formidable verbal force of Hursty helping the umpires and guiding the opposition to the correct interpretation of the rules.
Some good forward play in and around the D secured several corners and with a new routine in place successes were seen. The late arrival to the game from Ben Cotton was not a distraction from scoring a couple of well placed drag flicks from penalty corners over the course of the game.
It was clear that the Grims had the opportunities to convert more goals but I am sure these will come as the team (being encouraged to train more often together) gel over the next few weeks.
Although the score line flattered the opposition, they were the better side and deserved the three points. A fair performance from the grims but definitely more to come from a team that should be able to compete for a top half of the table finish.
