The mighty Grims fought hard against the waves of panic buyers in the middle of a fuel ‘shortage’ for their short trip away to the beach in the middle of a town; Westlands astroturf. They faced Gore Court 1s in their opening league match-up, it promised to be a gritty affair and the fans were not disappointed.

The Grims arrived on time and raring to go, but we’re set back immediately by the lack of a person to stand between the sticks and only 11 players. The boys were not to be deterred by their compatriot failing to be able to tell the time or set an alarm, so got in ‘the zone’ and lined up.

The Grims started strong, with their 11 outfield players and empty net catching ‘Court by surprise. A few trailing balls through their circle early on could not be pounced on by the blues’ forwards. It remained 0-0 for much of the half and our boys won several corners but were unable to convert.

The Grims were unfortunate to concede a penalty corner which was narrowly missed by the defensive unit on the line and unfortunately went into the break 1-0 down. Heads were held high after a very strong performance in the first half.

The second half saw the Grims’ bare 11 start to take it’s toll, with Gore Court crashing long balls ip the pitch in an attempt to find a lurking forward behind tired Canterbury legs.

The Court found their way into the net and opened up the flood gates, the Grims quickly found themselves trailing behind by several goals.

With the goal tally rising, defending became more and more desperate, the Grims conceded a penalty stroke and three green cards – luckily not all at once! But VC Rydon, Blue and Prebble Senior each took 2 minute rests on the sideline – spectators were heard to be saying they just wanted a rest.

The Grims did not give up and continued pushing hard for a consolation goal and found it late in the game, an excellent backhand cross from Max was expertly finished by the seasoned Prebble.

A very tough opening day at the office for Canterbury Pilgrims, but one to be proud of. Final score, Gore Court 9, Canterbury 1.
