To downtown Gillingham for a game that was so so different – for all the right reasons – from last week’s. Within 5 minutes a hard hit goal from Anchorians had taken them into the lead.
A quick Friars response though from a long corner resulted in Pete Bowell equalising.
Anchorians came back hard and from an error from forward Hayward took the lead again with a stunning goal. Yet again Friars came back hard equalising once again this time through a great solo run from Arthur Fassum and half time saw the teams at 2-2.
Some hard work from both teams saw end to end hockey with youngster Tom Tan increasing in confidence using his skills to great advantage but it was the probing Arthur Fassum after another good run started by evergreen Tony Jones which saw Friars in the lead for the first time in the match in the 55th minute. And that was the way the match ended though it should really have been a more comfortable victory as Anchorians defence played very high leaving plenty of space for the Friars forwards to capitalise on but they didn’t which meant a nervy last few minutes for the Friars defence well marshalled by Paul Donovan in goal and centre back Mike Barton. Thank you to Phil Sandy and the guy from Anchorians for both expertly umpiring
