Squires vs New Beccehamian’s 2’s (Home) | 17 Oct 20

Drew 1 – 1

Scorers: Rich Smith

With our opposition having scored 11 last week we knew they would turn up enthusiastic and keen for another win. However as has been the way for the last couple of weeks the Squires stood strong and dug deep against a well organised and well balanced 2nd XI. What has been so clear to see has been the real sense of belief and determination displayed by all that have represented the Squires this season. Not scoring many but certainly not conceeding many; between Dave and now Jude with the solid defence goals against remains very low.
The first half saw both sides size each other up and with it a real sense this was going to be a harder battle than New Beccs had had last weekend. Indeed the first half concluded with the Squires one up after a ‘scruffy’ goal which after a little bit of debate (in normal times this would have happened in the bar after the game but at the moment this was debated via Teamo!!) was claimed by Rich who had the last touch. The defence of Jo, James and David worked very hard and were greatly help by the contributions from John, Paul, Merv and Rich in mid-field. Indeed it it is fair to say the hard work of the mid-field helped both the defence and Riley, Oli, Angus and Tommy who rolled on and off to keep the legs fresh up front. Angus had a particularly good game swapping between the attack and mid-fields with ease.
Jude had another excellent game in goal (an able replacement for the normal veterans keeper who is in quarantine!!) with a couple of saves in the second half worthy of special note as they surely kept us in it and one brilliant reflex save from a short corner ensured a point was taken.
Blackheath & Elthamian Highwaymen next week who look like a side we should compete well with but an 11am start at Polo in these strange times means we shouldn’t rely on their web site photo or their past results. Rest well all – surely another tough test at Polo on the 24th? Thanks to Lee and Bob who officiated and kept the game flowing.
