Scorers: John Aikin (3)
MoM: Arthur Fassum
A classic example of how defeat was so nearly snatched from the jaws of victory. However it did not start off like that with a 2-0 scoreline with some “dominant play”(not a phrase normally associated with The Friars!) by half-time which should really have been 3 or 4 – however we shouldn’t carp. Both goals were put away neatly by John Aikin. The second was probably the easiest tap-in of his career so we will credit that goal to Mike Barton who started the whole move off from almost in front of The Friars goal.
After half time and Friars complacency got the better of them and New Beccs came back strongly and soon got a goal back. Friars missed a couple more but Arthur Fassum at right mid and increasing in confidence made some probing attacks allowing Aikin to get his third from a penalty corner. Mike Barton, John Ratcliffe and Pete Bowell also played their parts well. New Beccs got another after pressure 5 minutes from time and pushed hard for an equaliser. There was a sigh of Friars relief when evergreen umpires Bob Green and Martin Twyman did blow time and thank you to them both. 3 scrappy points in the swag bag but hey you get days like that!
