An early start at the impressive new set-up that is Marden Hockey Club. With it we boasted two sets of father / son pairings and a good balance of youth and experience. The first half saw both sides sizing the other up and with it a nil all score line. Not a boring half of hockey with Marden running with spirit at the defence of David, James, Nick and James who managed to repel all advances. Only one note worthy save from David in goal but as is often the case providing excellent final line defence if ever a chance does come through.
The midfield of John, Robin and Tony provided excellent support to the defence but with that we were not able to convert this to attack. Rich, playing his first game for the Squires, covered much of the pitch and always added to the balance of defence and attack.
After the half time break the quiet efficiency of the defence and mid-field started to show results for Merv, Oli and then Riley and Barney running up front. More and more running off the ball allowed the attacks to become more meaningful. With it our first short corner was awarded into the second half and with it the chance for Barney to deflect the ball past the oncoming keeper and defenders. At one – nil in a well balanced game it was always going to be a tense last 15 minutes but the combination of stout defenders and good hockey thinking allowed us to see out the attacks. As the game edged towards a happy conclusion David was called on to make a brilliant save with his chest and with that the journey home was definitely going to be more palatable.
