Off to the start of a new season. Rusty Friars against Ashford Antiques was an inauspicious but after a close season of pandemic-filled gloom at least an indication that we were all still on this planet! and the hockey in the first half wasn’t too bad though in need of some WD 40.
Some 15 minutes in right winger Geordie Hayward took the ball to the edge of the D, tried to pass to Pete Bowell but the ball deflected off an Ashford defender for the first Friars goal of the new season and the score remained 1-0 at the break.
A period of poor hockey from both teams ensued resulting in an equaliser for Ashford.
The last quarter of the game though belonged to the Friars and much better quality hockey. This proved providential as ‘scout’ Nigel Durban chose to watch this part of the match ! Some sterling work from Pete Bowell enabled him to get to the ball to John Aiken to grab the lead. More work from Bowell was somewhat wasted by others but Ollie Curtiss cemented the win with a goal in the last 5 minutes.
There was an excellent match from youngster Charlie Gotke and good support from Finn Murphy and Ollie Curtiss. Thanks to umpires Andrew Dunn and Ashford Man.
