The Griffins began their run in to the end of the season with the first of tough games against sides above them in the league with an away game at Ashford 4s, one place above them in the league.
The Griffins started brightly taking the game to an experienced Ashford side playing an up tempo passing game that looked to trouble the opposition. It therefore came as a surprise when after 5 minutes Ashford broke up a Griffins attack and moved the ball quickly upfield with the Griffins defence caught out of position and scored against the run of play. This spurred the Griffins on and they had an opportunity to equalise from a planned short corner move only to see Dave Sharp’s shot saved and cleared on the line, was foot involved? The powers that be thought not.
That was to be the only short corner of the game for the Griffins, Ashford only had one as well, and that just about summed the rest of the match. A keenly contested game by two pretty equal teams playing in the same way with the same formations but which neither could find a way to score and cancelled each other out.
Everyone put in a huge shift striving for the equaliser, it was good to see all of the Grifflets persisting to the end with mention of Sam, for not stopping running and deserved a goal, Edward for marking his man out of the game when he came on and Barney and Ethan up front harrying the Ashford defenders. Else where Will had an opportunity but missed the ball, Sharpie forgot the practice balls meaning Andy had to steal from the juniors supply (and face the wrath of Sally), the skipper played most of the second half, Les remembered that sweeper has a defensive duty and Matt snuffed out the Ashford threats down the right.
So a 1-0 defeat that makes no difference to the position in the table and a home game this week against Old Williamsonians in what can be expected to be an interesting game.
