Canterbury 4s went away with a bare 11 against Maidstone, in what they knew would be a tough bout against a strong 2nd 11. The men in green were met the opposition in blustery conditions, playing against a decent squad of 13. The 4th 11 also found themselves introducing 2 debutants into the team sheet, with Jenner covering for Hurst in goal and Jacob filling gaps in the defence.
The game started relatively one-sided, with Maidstone dominating possession and finding themselves with the best chances of the 1st half. 2 early breaks found Maidstone 2-0 within the opening 15, but an onslaught of short corners utilising the traditional ‘get it to the top and smack it,’ failed to penetrate the Canterbury goal.
Despite a rousing team talk at half-time from Forba, Canterbury struggled to breakdown the unrelenting defence of Maidstone, with the only green goal coming from a Blue penalty-flick against the run of play. Canterbury continued to find themselves under pressure and, despite a P-flick save from the debuting goalkeeper, Maidstone added 3 to their tally to finish the game 5-1.
Overall, a respectable score line for a struggling Canterbury 4th side against a dominant Maidstone 2nd XI.
