Squires vs Bromley & Beckenham 7’s (Away) | 25 Jan 20

Lost 2 – 1

Scorers: James Curtis

A sad day at the office! Although we expected a close encounter against a Bromley side who had surprisingly inflicted the only loss of the season to run-away league leaders we set up well and settled into the game. Indeed it wasn’t long before James Curtis had smashed the ball into the back board from a short corner and we were 1 – 0 up. The journey already seemed to have been worth it! If a couple of open goals had been taken the comfort factor would be growing fast.
However we did not use this as the spring board to better things and despite some good pressing from the mid-field of Ollie, James and the ever moving Max we could not capitalise on the start. Bromley then had a couple of short corners and having blotted out the first couple they switched the routine and a crisp shot snuck in at the un-guarded post. The defence of James, Graeme, Will and James continued to battle well and offered a good platform for those further up the field. Jude was called into action on a handful of occasions and did much to preserve the even status of the game.
Into the second half with honours’ even, despite having no spares to allow a breather, we felt confident of making sure the start to our second half of the league went one better from beating Herne Bay last week. Sadly a short corner was scooped off the line but judged illegally so and the resultant stroke was so well dispatched Jude had no chance.
At 2 – 1 down all woke up and with a real sense of want worked hard for the equaliser or even the winner which was so possible. Some final passes, some wayward shots and some baffling decision (by players and umpires) saw no equaliser and the long treck back from south east London was made to feel longer than it really is!
Oh well – onto a nice easy home fixture next week……..well it would be other than the Cliftonville side have only lost one and saw us off in October by 6 goals to 1. By then I hope we have more than the 11 names that worked so hard and may still be feeling the affects of a full 70 minutes this week.
