The second half of the league season commenced with a home fixture against our local rival Herne Bay. The Griffins have become the draw specialists of the club with six draws to date and the aim for this half of the season is to convert those draws into wins. From the start the Griffins started brightly and soon realised that up front they had the opposition for pace with Sam and Ethan giving a match long headache to the Bay defenders as they harried and chased everything. The Griffins had some success down the right with new Grifflet, Edward, slotting in nicely and linking well with Harry and the forwards. The Griffins took the lead from a short corner follow up, Ethan on hand to put away the loose ball. This spurred on Herne Bay and they soon equalised, catching the Griffs defence a little flat footed. They again piled on the pressure and scored another before half time to make the score 2-1 to Herne Bay at the break.
The second half followed much of the same pattern as the first with Griffins looking to attack on the break, probably because their midfield were suffering from the effects of Christmas, old age etc and couldn’t keep up with the youngsters up front! Sam was finally rewarded for his persistence taking the ball outside the D and beating both his defender and the keeper with great skills and composure to slot in the equaliser. Both teams went looking for the winning goal, Herne Bay winning a number of short corners which were all repulsed, but the stalemate could not be broken. So another draw on the list for the Griffins.
It must also be noted that the game saw the rare site of that lesser known the Griffin, the skipper no less, back from injury and that he lasted a full 70 minutes. How much damage that did and if he will be seen again remains to be seen!
Big match net week against the 5s, a draw (no surprise there) last time, so all support welcome at 4pm on the show pitch.
Thanks to Spratty for umpiring and mention must go to our sponsor who once again was there to add his support to the bar staff!
