Scorers: John Aikin, Jamie Harris, Tony Jones
MoM: John Ratty Ratcliffe
DoD: Geordie Hayward
Owing to a fixture timing “issue” the Friars had a 90 minute warm up whilst the visiting opposition K Sports were still on the M20. This caused some concern over whether the Friars might have shot their bolt before pushback. However perish the thought over their poor stamina as they started off brightly and indeed properly warmed up …… for once!
The first goal came from John Aikin who cleanly struck to ensure a one goal lead at half time.
Into the second half and Jamie Harris from a fine insertion from John Ratcliffe took the Friars to a 2 goal lead – the smile on his face was like he had won the lottery rather than his debut goal for the Friars. He immediately got subbed off and went to play cricket (owing to the delayed start).
K Sports then came back with a smartly taken goal and pressed hard for the equaliser but hard work from Paul Dono in goal and Nick Scott-Kilvert on his welcome return after injury helped keep them out along with Biggles Ward rolling back the years and some suitable grumpiness from Kevin himself.. Both Brian Hurlow and John Ratty Ratcliffe scurried hither and thither with the latter getting the MoM. But suitably it was a well taken planned short corner hatched between Aikin and Hayward that resulted in Captain Jonesy (a month short of his 77th birthday) tapping in the final goal.
There were some notable performances with Brian Moose Hurlow putting in a solid shift. Mr Grumpy did some good things and not so good things. Mike Green sadly had yet further hamstring issues but Paul Bulldog Lee injured for a while came back to also put in a shift narrowly missing a goal himself. Hayward had a somewhat chaotic game with some poor passing to imaginary Friars and he should have got a goal so he got the DoD. Manager Dowling put in a passable shift and is beginning to look like Clint Eastwood with a wonderful trench coat but meaner. So with Paul Donovan having a good game in goal the Friars look to resume their league campaign next week with some optimism….but hopefully not too much.
