New Year kicks in with a numerical brain fade
A fairly quiet non league game that got the Friars back in the groove for 2020. A fortunate first goal inside 5 minutes for John Aikin started the ball rolling. Nick Tan then got the next goal and after a whole season of trying with a 1 out of 100 success rate John Aikin got his second actually got a screaming reverse volley for the third goal. With Folkestone getting a goal just before half-time it was 3-1 at the break.
Into the second half and the Friars, never the sharpest tools in the box with arithmetic and complicated numbers, played the first 5 minutes with 10 players which the umpire, suitably Bob Green as a retired Langton teacher (see colourful pic below) had to amusingly point out. This still caused mad counting on the bench amongst the 3 subs (with big Geoff missing the first half owing to a traffic jam) to see who should go on.
Amongst our brighter student section Jamie Harris played a superb game throughout and deservedly won the Man of the Match award. However mention in Dispatches must go to Vice skipper Brian Hurlow who played his heart out after his Christmas break.
One further goal from Pete Bowell who also had a good game from a short corner and a Folkestone response brought the final score to 4-2 though once again Bob and his abacus had to confirm the score to no less than about 4 members of the Friars including your reporter. Many thanks to the two umpires Martin and Bob
