With Folkestone unable to field a side for the Griffins fixture we were bolstered by a couple of youngsters who had previously earned their chance to climb up the club. As it transpired this rather balanced the sides and both lined up with a mix of veterans and the balance being 14 to 16 years olds.
As the first game of the season after the Christmas break wound up it was obvious a little time was needed to gain back the first touch and speed of thought necessary to score goals. With a patient approach to the game this rather helped the Squires and with that we were able to take more and more control – Jonathan continues to impress with his attacks from right back and combined well with Josh. The combination and their willingness to cover much of the pitch was rewarded with a goal each; both as a result of confident running and pace to beat the defenders.
With the backs of Graham, James and Graeme, ably assisted by Will, competently dealing with any Folkestone attacks the midfield of Jimmy, Tony and Max grew into the game with Max really demonstrating a hunger for the ball. It was however Edward, playing slightly away from his favoured position, who delivered an excellent cross for Oli to swot it into the back of the net giving the keeper no chance.
All in all a good work out for the first game back – another friendly to ‘warm us up’ next weekend, away to K Sports……..if we can manage another controlled victory this will serve us well as we head into the league and the first few fixtures against those at the top of our league.
