An early morning push-back of 9.45 away suited bright eyed and bushy tailed Friars (apart from the Curtiss father-sone combo who had to be beamed in by Scottie having got lost) more than the home side some of whom seemed hung over – indeed their goalie admitted as much!
Despite a solid start the Canterbury team against league leaders there was no hint of the final result as we all had agreed that a point would be a fine result.
There were quickly some heroics and last ditch defence from Neil Birch, Phil Dowling, James Curtiss, Kevin Goulden, Chris Ward and GK Paul Donovan especially so when after 20 minutes SV took the lead. However at that point Friars dug deep and from some nice moves Simon Hurlow tapped in to equalise. Further stoic defence including a bullet of a shot kept out by Man of the Match ‘Dono’ ensured that we went into half time on 1-1.
After half time Friars began to really compete on equal terms with Valence missing passes and handing the ball back to The Friars – normally something that is reserved for them! Midway through the half Hayward, having struck the post with a shot, at the same time got mashed up, or ‘scythed’ in the words of one Friar, by the GK and after a bit of squawking was off for the rest of the game with strangely not even a penalty corner to show. Shortly after though Pete Bowell, always threatening on the left took a ball neatly into the D and shot hard to the left post to take the lead. This was further extended 5 minutes from time when Hurlow – Simon that is – playing beautifully struck for his second. His dad didn’t have too bad a game either and the other father-son combo James and Ollie Curtiss also had fine games with Ollie improving match by match in confidence and ability. Phil Dowling put in a good shift and managed to last the whole game no doubt due to his forensic preparation pre match to strap himself up.
SV struck back one minute from time but it was too late and Friars playing their best of the season had beaten the league leaders. We quickly retired to the Queens Head for some light refreshment with a pint …..of water for some as can be seen.
