On a cold grey day in South London Canterbury 4th Xl took on Burnt Ash 2nd Xl. Due to recent results Canterbury were lying second in the league table and Burnt Ash were at the bottom.
The game started well with Canterbury building the pressure down both sides of the pitch and many attack’s finished in the circle with a shot or attempt at the home teams goal. Canterbury continued to dominate and had probably 70% of the play but with long balls from the back to the forward line Burnt Ash were able to create their own chances and against the run of play scored the first goal of the game. The opposition seemed stronger and more determined on the ball at times and their grittiness payed off with another well taken goal even though Canterbury continued to have a large percentage of the play. First half over Canterbury trail by two.
The second half continued with Canterbury having much of the play creating chances in the circle but were unable to capitalise, even the several short corners lacked the quality to finish with a goal. The long ball and particularly the aerial from Burnt Ash was still a problem and wasn’t dealt with leading to another goal for the home team. The game finished Burnt Ash 3, Canterbury 0.
Today was a lesson in determination and quality in the right areas, strength on the ball vital and spatial awareness essential. Things will improve!! If we are to continue in the top half of the league table remember this match learn from it and move on…… to better performances.
