Havant 1 – 0 Canterbury (10/11/2019) – By Tom Oberg
The Canterbury 1s ventured out to Havant for what would be a very close and ultimately a disappointing loss. Before the game started, both teams, spectators and match officials stood for a minute of silence for remembrance Sunday. An encouraging pre game speech from our captain got the team ready to go. Unfortunately, after the first 30 seconds of the push back Louis Ridge rolled his ankle and hobbled off the pitch and didn’t return until late in the 1st quarter. All round both teams displayed a high level of hockey in the first half producing flowing, passing attacks. However, neither team could come up with the end product due to some fine defending from both sides as well as due to debutant goal keeper Cade Banditt, who kept Canterbury in the game with amazing saves low and high to prevent Havant from obtaining the lead.
The second half of hockey saw multiple slips and falls on the slippery Havant pitch, although the state of the pitch didn’t seem to fade Canterbury or Havant as both teams continued to try their hardest to break the deadlock. Canterbury thought they were going to take the three points back from the south coast when a short corner was won with 5 minutes to go. However, Havant won the ball back, broke down the other end, before calmly passing the ball round our stranded GK to take the lead in the 65th minute – heartbreak for the young Canterbury team.
At full time the Havant boys had secured a victory over Canterbury although the scoreline could have been much worse for Canterbury if it wasn’t for a very strong performance from the captain Toby Vaughan trying his hardest to prevent Havant from entering the circle. Unfortunately this was another loss in the books for Canterbury but many victories to come in the future.
