Scorers: Les Gurubatham 2, Ethan Aitken, Josh Kitson, Martin Southam
MoM: Josh Kitson
DoD: Les – for his socks
The Griffins entertained Gore Court this week hoping to bounce back from last weeks defeat. There was the usual mix of Grifflets, a few missing only 4 this week, waning stars, four of the squad playing the next day in the over 50s, a movie character, Uncle Fester (aka MJ), other regulars and the skipper was even sighted in the dugout passing in his observations.
The Griffins started brightly controlling possession and passing the ball ball well and it wasn’t long before Les opened the scoring, resplendent in Canterbury socks from yesteryear (he claimed he was saving the others for the big game the next day). The Griffins continued to dominate but perhaps lacked a bit of composure in and around the D trying to force the issue rather than ensuring we came away with something. Josh was causing Gore Court all sorts of problems down the right and worked really well with Harry and Ethan. The Griffins had a flick awarded after Ethan has been fouled in his one on one with the keeper, which he then put away with aplomb. The final few minutes of the half saw continued Canterbury pressure and the a truly remarkable site of Uncle Fester scoring from the top of the D. Now he will have described it to anyone who’ll listen as a rocket of an LBZ placed low to the bottom corner, those watching will describe it as a back hand sweep that somehow made it to the goal.
So 3-0 at half time, some wise words from the older heads and observations from the non playing skipper and the Griffins in control.
The second half continued in tussle vein with the Griffins on top. Josh continued to torment his opponents and finally got the goal he deserved when he followed in for a rebound from an Ethan shot. Les picked up a second and the short corner routine continued to fail despite much practice in the game (a role for the skipper should he ever reappear in pitch?)
So a comfortable win and onward to next week against bottom of the table Burnt Ash.
