A frustrating but highly competitive game as two equal teams, except for one crucial component, should have meant a point each however the Holcombe goalie kept out literally everything that was hit at him including an absolute screamer from John Aikin.

The one crucial defensive lapse was a collective combination of a Scribbling forward who had not marked close enough to lack of tackling to miscommunication in the back line and a ball that trickled over the line which was enough to give the opposition the 3 points and Mr Grumpy nearly a hernia.

Jonesy had his usual few to juggle with and with Curtiss senior and junior (JC and OC) instead of Lewes senior and junior this week, father and son packages are becoming common in the Friars this season – we the living embodiment of Care in The Community at both ends of the demographic spectrum. Both Curtiss’ had good games though both need a longer warm up.

When it takes so long for stalwart Phil Dowling to prepare his ageing frame for combat to see him limp off after just 10 minutes succumbing to a calf injury didn’t help matters in mid field. Mike Green for some reason started, after 40 years, playing on the left wing though this had to be pointed out to your correspondent who had failed – assuming wingers to be fleet of foot – to notice his presence in that position. Kevin Goulden so keen to always get back and pull pints has had a couple of stoical games and Brian though troubled by misty glasses has compensated with improved fitness. Big Geoff and Nick Scott-K beginning to work well in defence

A few off pitch moments – our GK Paul was spotted wearing a Go Pro some of the feed then posted on social media and as ‘Our Paul’ is the proprietor of Kent Sports Images (shameless marketing) the Friars are now looking at some marketing opportunities in the how shall we say, more mature hockey market. Greeny nearly found himself dumped at the M2 service station for being rude to his taxi driver and that was on the way to Holcombe rather than on the way back.. Other than that not a lot to report ….. and it rained throughout the game.
